It may feel like there are always new kitchen gadgets popping up nowdays, be it for raw food cuisine or not. I guess when setting out on a higher plant based diet, knowing which equipment to get first can be a little overwhelming.
It's been almost 3 years since my raw food adventure started and to begin with I found my Optimum Froothie 9400 to be my most vitally important piece of equipment. From there came my beloved spiralizer, which eventually lead to me purchasing my first dehydrator. Ultimately you can follow a creative and explorative raw foodie life without the use of a dehydrator, however once purchasing the raw food answers to an oven, a whole new avenue will unfold.
Again there are many dehydrators on the market so how do you know which one is the best for you and your requirements? Firstly I would always recommend a box style shape over a round one, this will make the preparation of crackers, pizza bases and wraps so much easier. With the round style dehydrator there is a hole through the middle for the air flow, which means you can only make 'donut' shaped produce. I also find the temperature control on the round dehydrators not to be so accurate or easy to work with. If you were just looking to only dry fruits and vegetables, then the round style would be suitable for your needs. However if it's more of a creative exploration of raw cuisine then the box shape is definitely the way forward!
The Optimum Froothie P200 Dehydrator is a lightweight, neat and compact machine to use, particularly helpful if you have limited kitchen space, or like me need to travel around with it a lot, especially when you live on the third floor of a block of flats!! ;)
The Optimum dehydrator comes in options of 6 or 10 trays, with the 10 tray having a mega wattage of 800w and the 6 tray of 650w. Both higher than other leading manufacturers on the market. As with all dehydrators there is a thermostat temperature control which is ideal for setting your creations to the high setting initially, shortening the dehydrating time as well as helping to kill off any harmful bacteria. After 'cooking' at the high temperature for the first hour turn the thermostat down to 41C to continue dehydrating for the remaining time required. On both the Optimum dehydrators there is a built in timer, which is not standard on all other brands and again can be useful if you are out a lot with work and other commitments. Froothie also sell their dehydrators with 2 Teflex sheets as standard, which is super helpful as with other brands these are a costly added on extra. Meaning you can get in your kitchen having fun straight away. One of the real perks included with the Optimum was the unique cleaning brush, it may not sound like a big deal, however when there is dried on pizza base on the mesh sheets and tray it's a total blessing. I did find the Optimum Froothie P200 to be a little bit noisy, however I have been advised that the company are in the process of creating a door for the front, which I believe will help to significantly reduce the noise output.
